Koko began learning American Sign Language (ASL) from Dr. Penny Patterson when she was only 1 year old. It was supposed to be just a 4-year PhD thesis for Penny, but “personal” bonds developed, and it has become a life-long study/relationship.

Today Koko uses over a thousand words of ASL to express her thoughts and feelings in complex phrases, and she invents new signs as the need arises. She also understands spoken English.

BSL Film: The Association

A few years ago the Reid brothers made a short film loosely based on Planes Trains and Automobiles... but with deaf people. It was called Text, Batteries and Earwax. It's been shown round the world, and even at the ICA as part of the British Deaf Association's London Deaf Film Festival. In The Gestural Origin of Language , Sherman Wilcox and David Armstrong use evidence from and about sign languages to explore the origins of language as we know it today. According to their model, it is sign, not spoken languages, that is the original mode of human communication.

The authors demonstrate that modern language is derived from practical actions and gestures that were increasingly recognized as having the potential to represent, and hence to communicate. In other words, the fundamental ability that allows us to use language is our ability to use pictures or icons, rather than linguistic symbols. Evidence from the human fossil record supports the authors' claim by showing that we were anatomically able to produce gestures and signs before we were able to speak fluently. Although speech evolved later as a secondary linguistic communication device that eventually replaced sign language as the primary mode of communication, speech has never entirely replaced signs and gestures.

Keith Wann, a child of deaf adults, is one of America’s funniest ASL comedians. Keith tours around the ASL Nation performing his one man show “Watching Two Worlds Collide” rated G to Adult Humor, and as a Storyteller for Festivals featuring family and children stories in ASL.
Keith has gone Hollywood and been on a few TV shows as an extra, including Law and Order and Court TV and also appeared in Mosdeux's Resonare as the Demented Apple Farmer...and just finished filming another film playing a deranged prison convict.

Keith is working on a collection of CODA stories for a book and plans on filming his 2nd DVD with all new material soon. Keith also teaches workshops for interpreters to analyze lyrics and ASL. From this he hopes to develop an ASL music show.

Keith has worked solo and in collaboration with other great ASL artists bringing to stage Coda stories, Deaf culture, Improv, Sketch comedy, and ASL student bashing. Keith lives in Brooklyn, NY and works part-time as an interpreter certified CI CT and NIC:Master. Keith just finished a week long program at Juliard on interpreting Broadway plays and plans to continue exploring more options in the performing arts as an interpreter and artist.

About the Creator
Jolanta Lapiak is the creator of Handspeak. She is a multitalented media artist, poet and narrator in visual/sign languges, a natural teacher and student filled with creativity, vision and exploration. In her childhood, her first languages were mathematics and drawing, along with gestures, signed and written languages. Throughout her life as a native Signer, she has lived in several cities and countries as well as she travels a lot, absorbing in cultures and languages.

Jolanta earned a BA, summa cum laude, from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. and a BFA with distinction in Media Arts and Digital Technologies from Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary. She is a MFA candidate in Fine and Media Arts at NSCAD University in Halifax. She has studied ASL linguistics and culture studies.
